Study English and Live the Language!

In 1982, the Intensive English Language Center (IELC) at the University of Nevada, Reno was established to enable international students to integrate into the mainstream of higher education. The IELC has three main goals: to teach the necessary academic, language and study skills to succeed at a university level, to introduce students to American culture and university life, and to help students make an effective transition from English as a Second Language to university-level studies. IELC students gain full access to the University’s campus facilities and can enjoy using the University libraries, the Writing Center for free tutoring, the Women’s Resource Center, the student health center, computer labs with Internet access and the campus sports facilities including indoor sports courts, swimming pools, a running track and gymnasiums. The IELC arranges a regular program of activities for its students and can include camping and trips to Lake Tahoe, bus tours throughout Reno, roller-skating and ice skating, local excursions to historic sites, skiing, movie nights, student receptions, dances and banquets. The IELC has full accreditation from CEA (The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation) and is a proud member of EnglishUSA(The American Association of Intensive English Programs) which promotes professional standards and quality instruction in intensive English programs.

Faculty Qualifications

The full-time faculty members at the IELC hold master's or PhD degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language, Linguistics, or in related fields. All of IELC instructors have extensive experience teaching in the United States and abroad.

Conditional Admission / Credit Courses

Students in the advanced and graduate level may also take a 3-credit academic course at the University while completing their English studies, with director’s approval. Students who successfully complete the advanced level may enter the University of Nevada, Reno or Nevada colleges at the undergraduate level without taking the TOEFL. Select graduate programs also offer Conditional Admission and accept the IELC recommendation in lieu of the TOEFL, after the student successfully completes the graduate level.
